Every Inchie Monday: Next

Hello for the last time this year Folks,

Next, this week's word at Every Inchie Monday is such an innocuous little word.  Four letters, not very threatening, but again this week I had a lot of trouble with it.  Best I could come up with was on inchie representing next year: 2016.  I put it on sparkly, New Year's Eve-ish paper, which made it difficult to photograph with the flash on the camera.

My quilled inchie really isn't quilled but it is tiny and made with paper.  I thought I would pay tribute to Trillian's brilliant idea of picking all next year's words from The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

I'm looking forward to next year's list.

Here's wishing you and yours a happy and healthy New Year.  My first resolution - and I'm someone who never makes resolutions, but I have a lot this year - is to take better pictures of my inchies.

Thank you everyone for visiting my site and for the wonderful comments.  They really make my day - and year.

Every Inchie Monday: Evolution

Hello Folks,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is evolution.  I think this may be one of the hardest words I've done since I joined mid-2014.  I could not think of anything to draw that would fit into one inch.  The best I could come up with was the evolution of the telephone.

If the drawn inchie was difficult, the quilled one was nearly impossible.  Best I could do was blue circles evolving in size:

It's pretty lame, but after A LOT of thought, it was the best I could do.  Some weeks you have it, some weeks you don't.

I think I need to evolve into a better thinker this week.

Hope your holiday preparations are going well and are not getting you down.  I confess that I often feel lonely at this time of the year.  I have  a small family that I will see once.  The rest of the time is empty.  Guess I shouldn't expect life to be like a movie.  Ah well, I will work on next year's inchies.  I thought I was pretty clever recognizing that some of the words are from The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy until someone pointed out that they are all from that book.  Way to go Trillian.

Every Inchie Monday: Locomotive

Hello Folks,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is locomotive.
I love riding on trains, even subway trains when I'm in a city that has them.  Don't know why, just always have.  Here's one of the better known locomotives, Thomas the Train:

I really love this week's quilled inchie.  Thought the steam added a special something, even if it does go off the inchie square.

I can't think of a  thing to do this week that has anything to do with  locomotives.  Oh well, have a good week.

Every Inchie Monday: Angel

Hello Folks,

I took a slightly odd approach to this week's word at Every Inchie Monday:  Angel.  I once again mine that special world of Doctor Who.  This is one of the bad guys on the show, a Weeping Angel.  They only move when you are not looking at them, so one of the catch phrases of the series is 'Don't Blink'.

My quilled inchie is along more traditional lines.

I'm delighted to see next year's words up.  Can't wait to get a start.  I'm going to work hard on photographing my inchies better this year - too many of mine are slightly out of focus.
At this time of the year where tensions can run high because everyone is so busy, let's try extra hard to be angels to each other (and especially store clerks)...and remember, Don't Blink.

Every Inchie Monday: Tea

Hello Folks,

This week's word for Every Inchie Monday is tea.  I was recently invited to a high tea wedding shower and we were asked to wear hats.  I had a tiny witch's hat on hair band because it was close to Halloween, and that is what I wore.  So my first offering is a hat for that most famous of tea parties - Alice's.

I have two quilled tea inchies.  The first is a tea bag (sorry for the blurriness)

And the second is a teacup and saucer, with steam coming off the tea,  that I copied from a picture on Pinterest.  I'd had considerably more time quilling when I made the tea cup than the teabag.  It is almost exactly one inch square.

Personally I drink neither tea nor coffee, nor alcohol.  Nevertheless, raise your beverage of choice in salute this week.  Can you toast with water?

Every Inchie Monday: Crochet

Hello Fellow Inchers,

I love to crochet.  I love yarn and the many colours it comes in.  I love the feel of it.  I love watching the progress as yarn becomes a sweater or scarf or amigurumi.  I want to make some of these tiny critters that pop up on Pinterest - just haven't found the time yet.  And I have trouble following a pattern!  I also want to learn Tunisian Crochet.

My first inchie is a tiny ring of crochet.  If I can make a ring the size of an inchie, maybe I can make amigurumi after all.

And, of course, you wouldn't get very far crocheting without a crochet hook:

I'm going to try and find time to do some crochet this week.  Hope you can too.  This is an example of amigurumi in case they are new to you:

Have a good week everyone.

[Editing note:  I replaced the picture of the crochet ring because I didn't realize the first picture was so dark and you couldn't see the pretty colour of the yarn.]

Every Inchie Monday: Exotic

Hello Folks,

Don't you just love the exotic, in any of its many applications?  That's this week's word at Every Inchie Monday.   And what could be more exotic than the rare white tiger?

I admit to being totally stuck as to what I could quill that would represent the exotic.  So I went with the imagination and offer you the exotic 'Kia multi coloris flos':

Even if only in our dreams, let's do something exotic this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Nymph

Hello Folks,

For this week's word for Every Inchie Monday, nymph, I'm revisiting that art history course I once took on 'Myth and Allegory in the Italian Renaissance' and the painting of multiple meanings, Sandro Botticelli's "La Primavera".  On the right side of the painting, "Zephyrus, the biting wind of March, kidnaps and possesses the nymph Chloris, whom he later marries and transforms into a deity; she becomes the goddess of Spring, eternal bearer of life, and is scattering roses on the ground" [Wikipedia]  (My one inch square was too small to see properly, so I enlarged it using the blogspot feature.)

Here's the whole painting, one of my absolute favourites, for its stunning beauty and the complexity of its meaning.

And my quilled nymph inchie goes in an entirely different direction  Here is a nymph moth, using the correct colours in the (sort of) correct places:

Nymph is defined as "a mythological spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful maiden inhabiting rivers, woods, or other locations"

Let's all be one this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Emotion

Hello Folks,

My first idea to show this week's word at Every Inchie Monday, Emotion, is with the iconic happy/sad, comedy/tragedy masks:

This is one of my very early quilled inchies (I didn't do them in order):

Keep smiling this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Texture

Hello Folks,

A toughie this week at Every Inchie Monday:  texture.  Couldn't decide what to do, so I offer you two choices.  The first is a one inch square of a very textured fabric:

And a container of texture paste.  Curry's brand is called modelling paste, but if you can read the French, it is called "Pate a Texturer".

My quilled inchie is supposed to be tactile. If you run your finger over it, you feel different textures because of the different heights and shapes of the pieces.  OK, this is stretching it.

Go around touching things this week - but don't get caught!

Every Inchie Monday: Yogurt

Hello Fellow Inchers,

For Every Inchie Monday the word is...Yogurt.  Yuch.   I can't stand yogurt.  The texture does me in every time I try and force my self to eat what I know is good for me.  I don't think I've ever had frozen Yogurt either, but I understand it is supposed to taste like ice cream?

My quilled version is a frozen Yogurt cone.  It's one of my first 3 dimensional creations:

Keep warm this week.  It's been snowing in parts of Southern Ontario.

Every Inchie Monday: Key

Hello Folks,

It's Thanksgiving today in Canada so I wish you and yours a happy Thanksgiving.

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is key.  I love keys - for the secrets they open (and hide) and for the intricate patterns and different shapes that older keys have.

I offer first a special kind of key - a key to the Tardis (if you're not a Doctor Who fan, this will mean nothing to you).  Over the years, the key has had many different shapes. from the mundane, that looks like it might open my front door, to the exotic.  I've chosen one of the more unusual ones:

Looks a little bit like a person wearing a dress of some kind, doesn't it?  But  I assure you it is accurate.

My quilled key is of the ordinary variety:

The quilling paper is a lovely pewter grey but the camera has washed it out and made it look white.  I now have silver edged paper which is really neat, so I really should do it again.

Keep you secrets close to your heart.

Thank you for the lovely comments.  They really make my day.

Every Inchie Monday: Lumberjack

Hi Folks,

A little late again this week.

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is lumberjack.  I was born a country girl and have always loved wearing plaid, even when it isn't in style.  So my first inchie is the iconic red and black plaid of a lumberjack.

My quilled inchie is one of the tools of the trade - an axe.

Let's all wear plaid this week!

Every Inchie Monday: Hotel

Hello Folks,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is hotel.  I love hotels - they are my idea of camping out.  I could never understand why people would want to sleep on the ground with the ants.

When I was a child I played a lot of Monopoly with my older brother, and lost a lot.  I always wanted a hotel on Boardwalk:

My quilled inchie is supposed to look like the hotel signs you see on the highway to tell you there is accommodation up ahead.  It consists of a figure reclining on a bed with a roof over top:

Have a luxurious week and thanks for stopping by.

Every Inchie Monday: Myth

Hello Folks,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is Myth.  I love mythology.  In university I took an art history course entitled 'Myth and Allegory in Italian Renaissance Art'.  I was in seventh heaven.  Best course I ever took, which unfortunately was never offered again.  lol.  Don't know why - too specific I suppose.  But it was indeed glorious studying all those wonderful paintings and how they depicted myths.

For my drawn inchie I have a couple of silly mythological dragons.  I didn't want to draw anyone killing them as always happens in mythology:

I got a little more traditional with my quilled inchie and did my best to depict Medusa, with her stunning gaze and all those snakes in her hair:

Have a week full of imagination.

Every Inchie Monday: Rhythm

Hello Fellow Inchers,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is one of those difficult concepts:  rhythm.  Not only is it hard to spell it's not easy to visualize.  This week I have chosen to go with one of my favourite musical teams, George and Ira Gershwin and their wonderul "I've got Rhythm".  My first inchie is the first musical phrase:

My quilled inchie is a single note.  This one was made quite a long time ago - I've since figured out how not to let the glue show, but I didn't feel like re-doing the inchie.

Hope you have great rhythm this week.  Thanks for all the lovely comments.  They really make my day.

Every Inchie Monday: Ear

Hello Fellow Inchers,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is ear.  I'm not very good at drawing people and when I do they always have hair over their ears because whereas noses are difficult, ears are impossible.  So instead I've gone a bit outside of the box.  Anyone remember old - very old - televisions that needed 'rabbit ears' to tune in the picture properly?

My quilled inchie is a little far out there as well.  No way could I quill a human ear, so I went for something to cover them when it gets cold:  ear muffs.

Listen to the whisperings this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Necklace

Hi Folks,

Thank you for visiting.  Today's word at Every Inchie Monday is necklace.  My first inchie is a beaded necklace I made a few years ago (I didn't just go out and make it for an inchie, although I am that dedicated.  lol).  The beads are all flowers and leaves and it is very summery.  The colour is a bit washed out in this photo.  I'm still getting used to the camera on my phone and lighting.

My second inchie is, of course, quilled  (Do you think I like cool colours?):

Decorate yourself this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Pavillion

Hi Folks,

I love the word pavillion (today's word at Every Inchie Monday).  Don't know why, just do.

My first offering is a drawing of a local pavillion, found at Dundurn Castle, in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Yes, we have a castle - sort of.   It's actually a very large house where Sir Allan MacNab lived.  (I'll let you look him up if you're not Canadian.)  Keep in mind, this is a city that has a 300 foot 'mountain', which is what we call the Niagara Escarpment which runs through the city (that's what Niagara Falls falls over).  The city is sort of divided into two parts: the mountain and below the mountain, which those that live there call the city.  Hamilton is also called 'the waterfall city' because of the amount of small waterfalls that go over this escarpment.  It's very pretty.

So this pavillion is part of the Dundurn Castle estate:

And, of course, I offer you my quilled inchie.  Not too bad this week (if a little out of focus).  If I could find my inchies I'd retake the picture.  I think they are hiding somewhere with my crochet hooks:

Keep covered this week.

Every Inchie Monday: Lamp

Hello Fellow Inchers,

I confess I forgot about Monday this week.  Oops.  I didn't have time to draw this week's word at Every Inchie Monday, Lamp, so I have used an inchie photo.  One of my favourite art movements is Art Deco.  Here is an Art Deco lamps for the first inchie.

And here is my rather odd quilled lamp.  It was rather hard to make a lamp and this is what I came up with.

Hope your week enlightened.

Gelli Printing on Fabric contest

Gelli Arts is having a contest to win gelli plates for printing on fabric.  Great idea - another use for the fabulous gelli plate:  go to http://gelliarts.blogspot.ca/2015/08/diy-hipster-chic-gelli-printed-patches.html

Every Inchie Monday: Wall

Hello Folks,

Wall is today's word for Every Inchie Monday.
The most important wall I could think of involved its destruction - the falling of the Berlin wall on Nov 9, 1989.

My quilling is a little more light hearted.  Being very shy, to this day I am still the wallflower at parties:

I've figured out the glue bit now but this was made quite a while ago before I knew how to hide the residue better.

Have a happy week.

Every Inchie Monday: Window

Hello Folks,

This week's word at Every Inchie Monday is window.  My drawing is nothing special, in fact, it's a rather wonky window - not one that would pass any house inspection:

For my quilled inchie I decided to go with the idea that the eyes are the windows of the soul:

Enjoy the simple pleasure of looking out your window this week.  The world is an amazing place.  If you are in Canada, enjoy this holiday Monday.
